Birding safari kenya:10 Days Meru National
Park, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, Lake Baringo, Lake
Naivasha.

Day
1. Meru National Park-This
is where George and Joy Adamson released several
hand-reared animals, including the son of the
famous lioness Elsa (immortalised in the book
Born Free) and their cheetah Pippa. George's
stint here as Park Warden meant the park had a
high profile in the 1970’s and '80’s. But it has
sadly gone through very dark days. The area was
hard hit by poachers, who murdered Joy Adamson
in Meru National Park and later George, at the
nearby Kora National Reserve. Elephant numbers
were decimated and a herd of white rhino that
were imported from South Africa and lovingly
protected by rangers, were shot along with their
keepers by heavily armed poachers. Security
since then has been beefed up, but it is best to
enquire about conditions, before arranging a
trip. Having said that it has lovely views, with
Mt Kenya as a backdrop, and there are plenty of
animals these days and birds.

Day 5. Lake Nakuru
This lake offers one of the world's most
spectacular wildlife sights, that of brilliant
pink flamingos as far as the eye can see. When
conditions are right, between one and two
million lesser and greater flamingos feed around
the shores of the shallow soda lake, together
with tens of thousands of other birds. The best
place to view the birds is from Baboon Cliff,
where you can look out over the dazzling fringe
of pink around the lake's shores. But be warned:
you are not guaranteed to see this
ornithological extravaganza - there are times
when the lake conditions change and the birds
move on to other soda lakes. So check first
before renting a car. Lake Nakuru was declared a
national park in 1961 and it now covers an area
of some 200 kmē. Here you will also see warthog,
waterbuck and large numbers of impala. Other
slightly shyer residents include buffalo,
Rothschild giraffe, eland, lion, leopard and
black rhino. It goes without saying that this is
a bird watchers paradise.

National park. Lunch and afternoon bird watching

Day 6. Lake Baringo
-About 100km

fresh water lake host to rare 300 bird’s species
seen no where else in Africa. Boat trips on the

papyrus boats is fun.
